your favorite October things

Some of mine are Disney's Headless Horseman cartoon (Bing Crosby was a terrible dad, but a great narrator), Harry Houdini stories, almost any old John Carpenter movie and a ton of scary old short stories on RelicRadio. I had M>R. James on the iPod this morning. I went for a jog and the smell of woodsmoke in the fall air was lovely.
What about you guys? Any scary books you like or scary memories you care to share?

A snippet of Halloween history from Nat. Geo.

This is from Near Dark, a very underappreciated vampire movie.

My son got tears in his 6 year-old-eyes when a our roommate carved out a small pumpkin for him, with a scary face... "I wanted a Happy Face..." She was crushed, but we managed to get another punkin and made things better for him.

I actually HATE the holiday, but love crispy caramel apples, swirling leaves, wearing warmer clothes against blustery days.
And the nostalgia that comes with the changing of the seasons...isn't as painful as it was when I was younger.

The leaves on my little maple trees are changing. They are two different varieties, so one has the bright orange leaves, the other has yellow. They look rather nice. Not sure what kind of tree my next door neighbors have, but it has turned a lovely deep red. Our whole block is looking very fall-like. I have just mowed my lawn for what I assume to be the final time this year! It seems too soon, but they are predicting SNOW for this weekend - mixed with rain, but SNOW nonetheless. (I'll take pictures, or make a little video!) I guess we will blow out the sprinklers tomorrow.

Next week I'm going to Pittsburgh for a few days. Should get some nice fall colors there still. In addition to all the visiting I'll be doing, we are going to a Penguins game! I haven't been to a hockey game in ages, I am really looking forward to that.

Well, YAY. Though yesterday was overcast, cold & wet (I actually turned on the heat!) we had none of the predicted snow on the grass this morning. Unless I missed it, that is. I was up late reading, heard the rain get heavier some time after 2 am. The cats let me sleep til 8:30! That is a rare treat. I think they were enjoying the flannel sheets & fleece bathrobes too much to worry about anything. There are some actual patches of blue peeking out from all the clouds in the sky this morning, and the streets are drying. Predicted temps for the week are in the 60s. Pittsburgh looks to be in the 70s!

I am off to make a pot of caramel apple tea and watch some football. The Bears are on for the first game. Later on it's just Denver & Jax, so I won't feel bad to skip it and get back to other chores.

Oh, and hey, Teresa - Happy Birthday! I hope Peetle does something nice for you!
